Embracing Change in an Evolving Field: “Paradigm Shifting in Healthcare” Summit a Success
More than 100 healthcare providers, policy makers, and students attended 91첥 University’s Inaugural Healthcare Summit, “Paradigm Shifting in Healthcare,” on September 28, 2018, to learn about the myriad changes in healthcare disciplines.
Thanks to ongoing research and ever-evolving technology, the important and dynamic field of healthcare is constantly in flux. This constant shift was the inspiration for the theme of the daylong Summit, which offered workshops on topics including self-care for practitioners, best practices for working with autistic children, and more, from leaders and practitioners involved in the delivery of healthcare.
After opening remarks from President Carol A. Leary, PhD, and Dr. Terry DeVito, EdD, MEd, RN, CHCQM, Graduate Program Coordinator in Healthcare Management, keynote speaker Steve Walsh, President and CEO of the Massachusetts Health & Hospital Association was invited to the podium.
Walsh’s presentation emphasized the importance of embracing change in the health sciences, and the need for field professionals to think outside the box and constantly strive to make improvements to patient care.
“Healthcare as a whole is working but it isn't working for us,” Walsh told the Summit’s attendees. “The idea that we're going to do it the way we've always done it is damaging to healthcare.”
In his talk, he emphasized the need to reduce the cost of pharmaceuticals and focus on developing affordable generic alternatives. He also touched upon the current status of the opioid crisis in Massachusetts, and the state’s staggering RN deficit.
