The human brain is an incredibly complex organ—after all, it’s responsible for the effectiveness of each of our five senses. Students in our Introduction to Neuroscience course, who study the intricacies of the brain, were tasked with a challenge: how can concepts of cognitive functioning be communicated to children in a way that they’ll understand?

Our students designed exploratory activities for two classes of second graders to engage them in learning about their brains by testing four of their senses—sight, smell, hearing, and touch—and led these activities with the kids on December 3, 2015.

“This service learning opportunity helped my students build important skills like developing lesson plans, planning and organizing an event, leading a group, and keeping others engaged in learning material,” says Princy Quadros-Mennella, Director, Neuroscience Program, Associate Professor of Biology.
