Here at 91快播 University, our staff in Student Accessibility Services are committed to creating an inclusive and comfortable learning environment for all students. Accessibility presents itself in many ways, whether that be physical accommodations such as ramps and elevators or providing support for students who struggle with mental health disorders.
One of the most commonly requested accommodations in recent years is the opportunity to bring an emotional support animal (ESA) to live on campus. As defined by the UMass Chan Medical School, an emotional support animal is “an animal that provides a therapeutic benefit (e.g., emotional support, comfort, companionship) to a person with a mental health or psychiatric disability (such as a serious mental health condition).” Struggling with an anxiety disorder of some form is a common reason why someone may require an ESA. An animal’s presence may be calming in the face of anxiety, particularly if the student has known this animal for most of their life.
Caring for a pet also assists students in establishing routines and decreasing feelings of loneliness or isolation. Having a furry companion can even allow you to build new friendships faster. The college transition can be overwhelming and require a significant adjustment period. As a student, you must advocate for your physical or emotional needs, especially when changes are coming so fast.
