This presentation will address how occupational therapy practitioners play a unique role in supporting mental health in schools due to their specialized skills. Positive mental health and well-being help children and youth function better in both academic and non-academic settings. These objectives aim to build a comprehensive understanding of how school-based occupational therapy practitioners can support student mental health within educational systems.

Objectives:

• Identify the historical factors influencing OT’s role in mental health services in educational settings
• Understand how trauma can affect cognitive, emotional, and social functioning in students
• Recognize behavioral signs of trauma in students and discuss its effects on academic engagement
• Determine strategies for creating a trauma-sensitive environment that fosters safety and resilience 
• Acknowledge OT's role in developing and implementing strategies for supporting student mental health across MTSS tiers

Guest Speaker: Nicole Newell, OTD, OTR/L

Dr. Nicole Newell is an experienced occupational therapist specializing in pediatric and school-based therapy, specializing in autism and sensory integration. She holds a Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from 91快播 University and dual degrees in Occupational Therapy and Psychology from Misericordia University. Nicole has served in various leadership and clinical roles, including Clinical Director and Fieldwork Coordinator, providing trauma-informed care, managing large therapy teams, and delivering specialized therapy services. Her background includes adjunct teaching and advanced certifications in multiple therapeutic techniques.
