m. mick powell

Instructor: Medical/Trauma Narratives and Social Justice

mick powell is a queer Black femme, poet, artist, and author of the chapbook chronicle the body. Their poems have been nominated for the Best of the Net Anthology and a Pushcart Prize and have been published in Frontier Poetry, Up the Staircase Quarterly, Tinderbox Poetry Journal, Passengers Journal, Honey Literary, and elsewhere. For their poetry, mick has been awarded a Tin House Residency, a research award from Barnard Library, a writing fellowship from the Ruth Stone House, and several other recognitions.

An Assistant Professor in Residence at the University of Connecticut in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and recipient of an AAUP Early Career Teaching Excellence Award, mick's work situates Black queer femme existence and experience as rupture, revolution, revelation, and revival. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing (SCSU) and B.A. in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Africana Studies (UConn). mick lives with her wife, Lauren, and numerous animal companions, in a home built in the year 1900.
